Charles E. Halstenson, Pharm. D., CEO
Chuck Halstenson is a research and healthcare executive with over 30 years
of diverse management and entrepreneurial experience including clinical
research and multi-site healthcare systems. Chuck received his Pharm. D.
degree from the University of Minnesota. He co-directed operations for a
phase I unit for over 17 years. Chuck is a Clinical Professor, Department of
Pharmacy Practice at the College of Pharmacy, University of Minnesota.
Chuck has presented 109 scientific abstracts at pharmacy related scientific
meetings, wrote seven book chapters and published 85 articles in
peer-reviewed scientific literature. Chuck is a Fellow of Clinical Pharmacology
and a Fellow, American College of Clinical Pharmacy.
Jeffrey D. Cosgrove, President
Jeff Cosgrove is a research executive with over 20 years of experience in
operational management of clinical research for the pharmaceutical industry.
Jeff's previous experience includes creating and managing recruitment for a
phase I organization and directing operations for phase I trials. Jeff has been
published in industry publications, served as a guest faculty lecturer for the
University of Minnesota, Masters in Research Program as well numerous
other associations. Jeff has been directly involved in the management of
over 800 early phase research protocols since 1990.
Mark A. Matson MD, Investigator
Dr. Mark Matson joined Prism Clinical Research as an investigator in 2007.
He earned his BA in Biochemistry, Molecular and Cell biology from
Northwestern University in Evanston, IL. He is a graduate of the University of
Minnesota Medical School. His post-graduate training consists of an Internal
Medicine Residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin and a Nephrology
Fellowship at Hennepin County Medical Center/ University of Minnesota.
He began to work as in investigator in a Phase I drug studies unit in 1990.
He has published numerous articles in medical journals and textbooks
including a chapter on Drug Induced Renal Disease in Pharmacotherapy.
During his years of clinical practice he has served in many management
and leadership roles on the medical staffs of hospitals and practice groups
and has been part of the clinical faculty of residency training programs.
He is certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology by the American Board of
Internal Medicine and as a Specialist in Clinical Hypertension by the
American Society of Hypertension.
Dr. Karen Karn
Dr. Karen Karn joined the Prism team in December 2012. She has been an investigator for phase II-IV pharmaceutical clinical trials at Prism's new partner, Ridgeview Research in Chaska, since 2006.
Dr. Karn trained at the University of Minnesota and practiced Ob-Gyn for a number of years before changing her focus to pharmaceutical research. She was certified as a Physician Investigator by the Academy of Physicians in Clinical Research in 2009.
Jaclyn Schloesser, Physician Assistant
Jaci Schloesser is a Physician Assistant who has been with Prism Clinical Research since 2010. She has worked as Sub-Investigator on more than 75 clinical trials. After earning her Master's in Medical Science Degree from Midwestern University (Downers Grove, Illinois) in 2009, she worked at Minute Clinic diagnosing and treating common illnesses. Prior to PA school, she worked as a Clinical Research Assistant on phase I-IV clinical research trials at Minnesota Gastroenterology and Hennepin County Medical Center. She graduated from Hamline University (Saint Paul, Minnesota) in 2005 with a BA in both biology and psychology.
Dr. Gary D. Berman
Gary D. Berman, MD earned his medical degree from the Mayo Medical School, Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minnesota. He was an Internal Medicine resident physician at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio, and also completed Fellowships in Allergy and Immunology and Headaches. Dr. Berman is a Diplomate, American Board of Allergy and Immunology and is certified by the National Board for certification in Headache Management.
He is an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Medicine, University of Minnesota, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care. He is a Fellow of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology and a member of the American College of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology; the American Thoracic Society; and the American Headache Foundation.
For the past several years, Dr. Berman has received the Minneapolis/St. Paul Magazine Top Doctor Award in the field of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
Dr. Berman is active in clinical research acting as principal investigator of studies in asthma, allergy, COPD, headache and migraine. He is the President of Clinical Research Network (CRN), a group of nationally recognized research sites. He has served on advisory boards for various pharmaceutical companies and lectures frequently on various topics including asthma, allergy and migraine. He has a busy practice devoting approximately 25% of his time to the treatment of headache patients.
Dr. Daniel Ries
Dr. Ries obtained his undergraduate degree from Carleton College and his medical degree from the University of Minnesota. He completed his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina. He completed a Fellowship in Nephrology at the University of Colorado Medical Center in Denver, Colorado in 2001. He has practiced with Kidney Specialists of Minnesota since 2001 and has a broad variety of clinical interests including critical care nephrology, fluid balance and electrolyte disorders, treatment of acute and chronic kidney disease, dialysis, and clinical research. He has been voted one of Minnesota's Top Doctors for Nephrology. Dr. Ries has participated in clinical research since 1999 and has been a Principal or Subinvestigator on over 300 clinical trials spanning all phases of drug development, currently serving as Medical Director of Twin Cities Clinical Research center and collaborating with Prism Clinical Research Center. He serves in an administrative leadership capacity for his practice and Allina Health Mercy Hospital and is actively involved in patient quality improvement and care delivery projects in this role.
Outside of work, Dr. Ries enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters. He enjoys long distance running, skiing, and reading.
Dr. George Canas
As an Iowa native, Dr. Canas received his medical degree from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine residency and fellowship training at the University of Minnesota. He has dual board certification in both internal medicine and nephrology. Since 2004, Dr. Canas has overseen upwards of 30 clinical studies as the Principal Investigator or Subinvestigator. He is locally recognized as an expert in kidney function and disease and was voted "Top Doctor" of nephrology in the Twin Cities by Mpls.St.Paul Magazine in 2010 and 2012.
